OUR MISSION

Mission Statement

Home Sweet Home Animal Rescue of Long Island (HSHLI) is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3), no-kill feline rescue dedicated to reducing Long Island’s community cat population through comprehensive Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) efforts. Our work includes spay/neuter, vaccination, and medical treatment for illnesses and injuries identified at the time of trapping, ensuring every cat receives compassionate and responsible care.

Founded in 2013, HSHLI has evolved to focus primarily on TNR since 2020, recognizing that education, community outreach, and accessible resources are essential to addressing the overwhelming number of homeless cats on Long Island. We provide financial assistance to independent trappers without rescue backing, empowering them to continue vital TNR efforts within their communities.

In addition to population control, we are committed to supporting pet owners in need. Through direct donations and community pet food drives, we provide limited cat and dog food assistance to families facing hardship, helping prevent pet surrender and the trauma that follows. We also partner with a long-established local food pantry to supply pet food to families receiving food assistance, recognizing that keeping pets with their families

strengthens both.

HSHLI provides daily food, shelter, and medical care to a managed feral colony that has been responsibly reduced and maintained for over a decade. Friendly cats are rehabilitated and placed into loving indoor homes whenever possible, while feral cats are allowed to live safely

in the environment they know, with ongoing oversight and care.

While we are currently unable to intake new cats due to limited facilities and funding, we continue to assist the community with rehoming guidance, adoption application review, and post-adoption support — including medical or behavioral assistance when needed. We honor our lifelong commitment to the animals we place and to the families who adopt them.

We are not a large rescue — we are a dedicated and quality-driven rescue. Through responsible action, community education, and compassionate care, we remain committed to improving the lives of Long Island’s cats and the people who care for them.
